| 内容記述 | Many studies have revealed a steady and general increase in the use of the gerund in the history of English complementation, while there is a degree of flexibility in the use of both gerunds and infinitives in Modern English. This is one of several historical developments in complement patterns that have come to be known as the Great Complement Shift, a term first used in print by Rhodenburg (2006). Iyeiri (2010) redefined this Great Complement Shift as a combination of two different shifts: (a) the shift from that-clause to to-infinitives, the first complement shift; and (b) the shift from to-infinitives to gerunds, the second complement shift. However, there are not many detailed observations on the systematic evolution of complementation in the history of English as yet. Therefore, this study observed, from a quantitative point of view, the detailed changing patterns of complementation in Early Modern English when the first complement shift is supposed to have been most prominently in progress. | |||||||||||
