内容記述タイプ Abstract
内容記述 The primary objective of this study was to determine sex differences in annual changes of total body fat mass (TBFM) and body fat distribution (subcutaneous fat mass, SFM; internal fat mass, IFM) in a longitudinal sample of normal-weight young children. From 1998 to 1999, annual body composition examinations of healthy young children, aged 3 -6 years, were performed in different parts of Fukuoka city, Japan. For each sex, normal body mass was defined on the basis of lying between the 25th and 75th percentiles for body mass index (BMI: kg/㎡) in 1998. Thirty-eight boys and 43 girls were designated as being of normal weight. Measurements of body composition were made using bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA). Lean body mass (LBM) was calculated using the equation of Goran et al. (1993). TBFM was calculated as the difference between body mass and LBM. SFM was calculated using a modification of the equation derived by Skerjl et al. (1953) and Davies et al. (1986). The main modifications made to the equation in the present study were the introduction of (1) mean thickness of adipose tissue over the body surface 2 and (2) skin weight. IFM was calculated as the difference between TBFM and SFM. From ages 3 through 6 years, the mean height and body mass increased with age in boys and girls, and showed significant age differences. In contrast, the mean BMI decreased slightly in both sexes within the same age range, and showed no significant age differences. However, the mean annual increments of height and body mass showed no significant age or sex differences. There were significant differences between the age groups in each body fat variable (TBFM, SFM, IFM, and TBFM body mass), although SFM IFM decreased slightly in both boys and girls. The mean annual changes in body fat variables increased with age in both sexes, and showed significant age differences. Additionally, the annual change in SFM IFM in both sexes decreased progressively with age, and age differences were not statistically significant. The sex-specific annual change in body fat during childhood was characterized by an almost linear increase in both sexes, and there was no statistically significant difference between boys and girls. We conclude that further research, including long-term assessment of body composition variables, is required in order to clarify the dynamics of age-related body fat changes in Japanese children.
