内容記述 | This article introduces the theory of automaticity and shows how this theory can be applied to actual curriculum development. Automaticity theory tries to explain people's skill acquisition as a function of the automaticity of the operating processes. For example, Anderson (1995) divided the processes of automaticity acquisition into three stages; i.e. the cognitive stage, the associative stage, and the autonomous stage. The importance of training at the associative stage is often neglected in formal language education. However, employing communicative activities for each distinct skill does not guarantee that learners can use it in more complex tasks such as conversation. The stage learners really internalize what they have learned and acquire the ability to use it is after they have learned each skill and practice it m more integrative tasks and prepare for proficiency tests. Thus, the importance of incorporating less-framed, more integrative activities at the associative stage and measuring learner's spontaneous language proficiency is stressed. |
